I don’t pick up anything obvious on this rifle except the jeweled bolt…

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=359604959

Don’t remember an example of factory jeweling a bolt but I’m far from an expert on what they did or did not offer?

Bluing looks correct to me on the receiver and buttplate.

Lettering: In the one decent photo it looks okay, but… the remainder of the photos critical for inspection are so amateurish that they are unusable.

Email to the seller for details, reserve, history, resulted in a smart-a__, unhelpful response so I suspect the rifle won’t reach whatever the reserve is; likely too high in any event.

Long time since I priced these but what are your opinions on originality and value range?

They are not even that good. Do these idiots really think people will buy based on that sort of junk??

If there were good photos it could be a fine looking rifle.

Good photos, or at least a courtesy inspection period. Either one would bring more money to the seller as I see it.

Winchester did not offer jeweled bolts on any of the semi-autos, and definitely not that early (1910). The butt stock has been sanded and refinished in my opinion.

That’s a very nice 1903 Renegade!
I’ve personally never heard of a factory jeweled bolt nor seen one on a Winchester .22 semi-auto until this one.
Appreciate the input from all.
You may have a point on the stock Bert. Almost too flawless.
I have trouble figuring out how a rifle could be maintained in that condition since 1910 without some story or explanation, i.e., "it was locked in a bank vault", or some sort of explanation.
I bought a "new" 1936 Daisy Red Ryder, that even had a mint box. The explanation was that the Kansas family had lost the boy in a farming accident shortly before they could give it to him for Christmas… sad for sure but totally believable.
This 03 is certainly a beautiful rifle. I’ve got an outdated blue book but IMHO, I guess-ti-mate around $3K to $3.5K tops since it’s a deluxe and the book adds a 100% premium? Any other value estimates?
(of course, less if the discrepancies are there)

The buyer got a beautiful rifle… Excellent price attained. Little over what I would have thought but what’s a few hundred when you’re up that high; especially at auction? May have brought $4K or better with "Julia quality" photography and a bit of history. Would love to know where it’s been for over 100 years…

I have one that is in remarkable shape. I can’t find anything about what the value might be. Called to get a letter on it and the Cody museum told me there were no surviving records that far back. It was made in 1918 and has a high grade stock and scrolling around the receiver.

Randy,

Can you provide a link to some clear well illuminated pictures of your Model 1903 Fancy Rifle ?
