OfflineFigure a lot of 38-40 and 44-40’s were bought by the movie studios as they worked well with the 5 in one blanks. Many were plated and handguards removed to make fake Henrys. These guns were plentiful back before they started using these rifle in every cowboy movie ever made. Even Lucas Mc Caines M92 was too early for the time frame, and was a 38-40 to boot. They probably used M1892’s at the Alamo too.
So, with todays shortage of real nice 44’s, you have to pay premiums to own one, especially the SR carbines. I have 4 nice ones and I would not sell any of them, even for a premium. Big Larry

OfflineI am not sure but, I think an 1892 was used in the tv series "wanted dead or alive" and what I get a kick out of is the ammo belt he is wearing is full of very long rifle cartridges. You never see him reload from this belt. It was all for show but, most people would not pick up on that.

OfflineI have one of the Paramount Movie Studio’s Winchester Model 92 44-40 20" Octagon barrel Saddle Ring Carbines as documented by Leroy Mertz. These were specially made up by Winchester with unique characteristics used in some films then sold off. Mine is a family heirloom, purchased by my dad at Hudson’s Sporting Goods in NYC in about 1938.

OfflineI have been at this a long time 94 shorties but for the most part I had
to rely on books and real life examples of the actual guns because their
was no internet to run to check with the experts… I guess what I am saying
is I spent to much of my life with the real thing and I am very lacking in the
computer skills. I promise you that it is not for anyones benefit or to
ruffle any feathers.

You just proved that you have the computer skills because you went into your previous post and corrected it. As far as real world goes, I started collecting Winchesters over 45 years ago when the only reference was "The Winchester Book" by Madis. I am 70 years old and type with 2 fingers but, if I post something and it comes up wrong, I go back and fix it.

Paul,
I fixed that post (to shorten it)

Offlinetwobit, I have seen many M1892’s well into the $4,000 range for a so so rifle or carbine. That’s 44-40 only. I have seen minty rifles in the $10,000+ price range too. Carbines bring more sometime, but are not often found in mint state. If that is not premium, tell me what is? Sure, they are not in the league with M1873’s and M1886’s, but most of the time it is harder to find a nice M1892 rifle in 44-40. The M1892 has its share of fakes too. Big Larry
