There is a nice M1892 rifle # 85456, that has the early placement of proofs on the bbl. The rifle was made in 1897 when they did not proof these. What gives? The rifle is on Gun Broker and I do not have a link. Thanks, Big Larry

Please post or email me a photo of the barrel address stamp on the rifle.

It is likely this particular firearm went back to the factory after they started applying the proofmarks to be repaired and then was returned. The factory letter will likely state this to be the case (e.g., that the rifle was a return & repair, not that proofmarks were applied.) It is somewhat odd that the owner states that he has a letter but does not provide a photo of the letter and/or transcribe its contents.

The owner states that the letter does not say anything about any R&R. He has not posted the letter. He called Cody and they checked their records again and did change the DOM to 1897 verses 1898, but said no R&R recorded.
