Went to the local gun show today and found a couple of 86’s that I’m going back to look at tomorrow. One was a solid frame 2/3 mag 45/70 with a 20" barrel. It had to be original just due to barrel wall thickness at the muzzle. The serial was around 154,xxx.
The other was a takedown 45/70 LW but the cool thing was that the serial number was 159,400! Thats the highest I’ve seen but I’m sure there are higher. From the books I have they go another 500? Guy wanted 3k for the takedown but from what I’ve seen I guess the later guns were just about all takedowns and I guess that combo isn’t that rare. I’m still gonna go back and look.

Winchester 1886’s were propduced until 159,994. About 15 yrs ago, I had 159,987 in my hands. It is a deluxe model, in very good (nearly mint) condition. It was offered to me for sale at the Timonium gun show for $2,700. I did not have that much cash on me at the time and was promised I could buy it after the show from the seller if someone did not come along with the $2,700 in cash. Of course, some one did. I believe I was told the new buyer was from Sweden.
