As I said in the title, am I missing something here??

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=407253124

Didn’t think round barrel antique 1894s were so rare they commanded such a premium!

How does this happen? I am just trying to understand the mindset or process that leads one to this.

Anyway, as the seller states, "won’t last long", so better get on’ er guys. Too bad it is out of my league.

Photos 16,17,18–sanded and separating stock. Bore not so good. Spending their starting sum on a rifle, a person could come home with mighty nice Winchester. Maybe a takedown with beautiful wood–maybe two of them!

I thought maybe his finger slipped (twice) and he added an extra "0" to the starting bid and the BIN. I know some people throw out a high price just trolling for a sucker, but this is ridiculous.

Matt,

The seller is living in a fantasy world, and has grand illusions about the value of that standard Sporting Rifle. He undoubtedly will own it for a very long time unless he cuts his asking price down to less than 50% of what it is now.

Seller does not show a photo of the serial number but, if it is 55,000, it is an 1899 rifle and not an antique.___ New info, s/n is 552XX. One step closer to making an offer. Laugh Assuming that his price was in Peso’s.

I just bought a 1/2 rd 1/2 oct. 1907 vintage M1894 in 38-55 a 90%+ rifle with mint bore that is lettered, for $2,500 from a well known dealer. It makes this one look like a P.O.S. Big Larry

It seems common on GB, these dealers are trolling for the new collector to bite!

Phew! I am glad it was not just me. Being a new father, there hasn’t been a lot of sleep these last two weeks. Thought maybe I was losing it 🙂

As was noted, a whole lot of rifle – or two – could be bought with that money. Sure hope no one is stupid enough to bid on it, but I won’t hold my breathe!

I sent the seller a message informing him that it is an 1899 production rifle, and in his reply, he basically told me that I do not know what I am talking about. I replied with a more formal introduction 😈

Even with your titles and expertise, Bert, I doubt that the seller will come anywhere close to a "Thank you." More likely at the other extreme with a few choice expletives chosen just for you.

At least you attempted to offer him a clue.

WOW! That is not a bad gun and I wouldn’t mind owning it but I could pick up one in similar condition of the same vintage for around $1000 in my area. So I would probably just save the 15,000 extra and buy one here.
BTW Matt, congratulations on the new arrival. Just wait, you thought Winchesters were a drain on the finances!!

Thanks Mike. Posted a little pic and introduction in the General Discussion forum. Yes, I am aware my collecting may take a hit now. And she is s girl, so she will have me spending for a long time!
Mike: I sent you a PM. Let me know if you need that.

It is a rare round barrel with 200 rounds of ammo. That alone should make it at least $600……
