George Madis, in The Winchester Handbook, tells us that 1892 takedowns were first offered in 1893 at serials near 27000.

I have takedown no. 18501, a .38 cal. rifle with 24" octagon barrel. Are there others known around this no. range, or earlier?

Yes there are. I have 28 in my survey of 1892 takedown rifles that come before yours. They start in the late 13K serial range. All are large caliber standard takedown rifles (exception is one in small caliber rifle that has been altered). They will normally have a little nicer than plain wood–a little figure at least on the forearm, maybe on the buttstock. There may be more TD rifles that have come before yours in the records (I dont have a copy of the factory records), the 28 in my survey are what I have had "eyes on" so to speak.

The first small caliber TD rifle appears in the 20500 SN range.

I would like to add your TD rifle to my survey (or anyone else out there who would like theirs included in the survey). Just confirm the barrel type (round/octagon/1/2 round), magazine length, buttstock type (Crescent/shotgun) and any additional special order features.

Thanks,
Chris

Thanks Chris for your reply.

The rifle does have better than the usual wood. It has a crescent buttplate and a full magazine.

If you would like to see a photo then go to http://www.australianarmsauctions.com, then to the catalogue for the May 4 auction and then to lot 576. The photos and descriptions are not as you would be accustomed to from the U.S. auction houses.

I owned this rifle some 25 years ago and bought it back at this auction.

Frank.
