I just picked up this beater Serial number is 36,564. I like original stuff but it had this compass in the stock so I almost walked away. After looking at it I just couldn’t let a 5 digit 1892 wth that much original finish go to God know where. It still has case on the butt. It’s not as nice as my 3 digit but its the second nicest 1892 I’ve had the privilege to put my hands on guys. Couple of questions I have for you folk?
1. Any idea on the compass? Not in the letter.
2. Whatcha think its fair value is even with the early compass?
3. Would you save it for your collection?

Mike,
It is a very nice clean Model 1892. The compass was almost certainly installed by a previous owner, and it does detract from the collector value, but I do not know how much. More than likely that number will be different for every collector who looks at it. If I was looking for a real clean antique Model 1892, I would consider that rifle if it was priced appropriately. I do not know what the appropriate value number is.

Yes, I would keep it in my collection if I got it at the right price! That gun would sell on GB for over $2000, but probably it would not go to $3000. The only thing I don’t like about the rifle now that it has a compass is that the compass was not centered on the stock! Clean install though.
My biggest worry is that north would always be toward the receiver! A very nice looking early 1892 for sure. All the stamp styles and locations are correct. Without the compass it would easily be in the $3500 range. I would keep it for sure. The compass looks on the old side so it fits with the look and feel of the rifle.

Very nice looking rifle that I would be happy to own too. I wonder how much such an alteration would detract from its value as well. I would have figured the old 1890 in LR caliber shown at the below link would have went for at least $1200.00, and even as much as the buy now price of $1700, which I thought was more than fair as well, but it appears that the bids might have been geared to the likelihood that the wood had been refinished.

I have seen the same compass in other stocks. One was a savage 99, so an aftermarket utilitarian add-on. Im sure it saved many from getting lost as it was installed pre – GPS. I remember losing my compass in the woods and very nearly got stuck there overnight 1990 I went out and bought a GPS right away , and with no computer background , it was very cumbersone for me to learn, but in glad I did learn, rather than install compasses in my Winchesters !
PS Nice gun in a nice cal. I have been enjoying shooting mine at 200M lately
I dont think I would have a problem keeping it in my collection. The compass does distract some but still, it was personalized by one of its prior owners. I dont think you would have much luck finding an original set of wood in that good of condition, you just dont see it around anymore. Nice looking rifle.

I think it’s pretty neat. Very nice 92. My thought on positioning is that for a right handed shooter your wrist would naturally flex toward your body when you referenced the compass? If it were on the left side it would be awkward to reference by flexing your wrist forward. Make sense?

Hello Dave,
Could I get a series of photos of your rifle so that I might add it into a research survey which I am working on? I am glad to answer any questions you might have.
