I don’t see any clues to refinish. Looks right to me. But, I’d sure like to see more photos, especially barrel markings. Four photos do not serve the seller well. Good looking gun. Oh, and I have no idea as to value.

It does appear to be a really nice 94. I emailed the seller at least a month ago asking for additional photos, but did not receive any. Cannot be in too big a rush to sell.

This is the second or third time that gun has been listed on GB. It does look like a nice gun. The photos look like photos from an auction sight verses from the seller. I have asked him about that, but he did not answer that question. He did answer other questions though. It does bother me a bit that the TD ring and the receiver have different bluing/patinas, although that could be ok….don’t know. Even though he looks to have a nice gun, he doesn’t do a steller job of pictures or communication. I also have to believe he is not to interested in selling it. He did email me and said "This rifle “letters” as a 32-40, nickel steel barrel, side receiver sight (Lyman “D”)". I think I would be showing a copy of the letter if I were him. In my opinion, and for that kind of money, a seller must have good pictures and a very thorough and descriptive description. I do not understand why he doesn’t do this. He just might sell the gun. I don’t see the serial number, but it certainly looks EXACTLY like a rifle I bought from an auction company a couple of years back. When I fired it (I shoot all of my Winchesters) the case was blown out to a 32 Win Special. It had been rechambered. The auction company stood behind their reputation and refunded my money.

So this gun has been rechambered from a 32-40 to a 32WS and not being disclosed as such??? That’s awful. Peter

Wow isnt that interesting I would be livid when I found that out after paying that kind of money . I would have shot it too , and noticed, what a let down ,I wonder if there was a chain of people scammed by this gun?

To read between the lines , someone could have bought it for peanuts when considered worthless (WW 11 era ? ) then decided to chamber it for a more modern cartridge that you could get "modern ammo" for ,( and then no one did use it? ) (origional re-chambering owner died? ) and then owners kept it squirreled away for another 50-60 years? .
I guess its possible that it was used real lightly and then someone (realizing what they had when prices started to inch up ) did get a re-finish to make it look new again , But it would have to be the perfect restoration to get the case color perfect on lever, hammer and the rest of the gun perfectly matching, except for the slight diifference in blueing color at the take down split. But guns from this era are often said to have some flaking, even when N.I. B. ?

I had contact with the seller before I found out about this caliber switch thing. Here is part of one of the emails he sent me back…"Please note: This rifle “letters” as a 32-40, nickel steel barrel, side receiver sight (Lyman “D”), etc. FYI……….I purchased this rifle about 25 years ago, primarily because of the condition, and filled a spot in my personal collection and paid about $5500.00." Now, I’m not sure how much of that is truth judging by what is going on here. I could be that he did buy the gun 25 years ago and several years ago, he listed it with an auction house. That’s where "dimrod" comes in. Luckily he noticed the recalibration, sent it back to the auction house, who in turn returned his money and sent the gun back to the owner, who very well could be the present seller, still trying to get rid of this gun that someone stuck him with. I personally don’t think the gun has been refinished, and I have no idea why someone would change the caliber to a 32 WS, unless it was for the reason 25-20 mentioned. As good a condition as the gun is in, I can’t imagine that the bore was bad enough that it needed to be bored out to a bigger caliber. Whatever happened here, it is my opinion that whenever something like this happens, it is very bad for the Winchester collecting community, and certainly has the potential to run off collectors who might just be getting started and could get scared off by something like this. I have been collecting for about 10 years now and have never shot one of these or checked to see if the caliber stamped on the barrel matches the bore. Is there an easy way to determine the caliber of the bore without shooting it? I would think one could measure the bore with inside calipers or something?? I do feel a bit sorry for the seller if he unknowingly got stuck by someone with this gun. I don’t agree with his method of trying to get rid of it though. Peter

Someone here mentioned that 2 or3 out of their 5, 32-40’s had been re-chambered to 32 Win spcl, so it must have been a common thing at one time, certainly easy as the bores ,cartridge head and rim Dia are the same , The 32-40 chamber would simply have to be reamed to the more "bottleneck " configuration of the 32 Win SPCL.
I love the 32-40 tapered cartridge, and have 3 old Wins and one Marlin, DOM 1903 -1912 , like to shoot them all and luckily none have been converted, and never would have thought to check, but I will now if I encounter another , although I am trying to avoid gunstores, gunshows auctions, and other places of temptation

Matt, I see that little face you added there, and I don’t disagree with you for sure. I’m trying to be nice and not call the guy an outright crook. Ya, $5500.00 for that gun 25 years ago is pretty unbelievable as far as I’m concerned, but that’s what he emailed me. There seems to be a lot of smoke coming from the seller here…seems he is having trouble with the truth. I emailed him about the caliber switch thing and got no response of course. Guess I’ll quit feeling a bit sorry for him. Peter

PS: that gun will letter…anyone check that? Seller said he had a letter, but never showed it.

This gun was on GB a couple of months ago and I was considering it , so I called this guy. The first thing he asked me was if I was going to shoot it. I told him I have some that I have never shot. He said I was just the kind of guy he wanted to sell it to. When I told him that I probably would , he told me that a friend of his borrowed it from time to time and took it to the range to shoot it. He thought "maybe" his friend had said something about the ejected cases looking like .32 specials , but he wasn’t sure. Later in the lengthy conversation , it came out that he knew it was a .32 special. He assured me that was irrevelent , because of the condition. He said Winchester collectors don’t shoot their guns anyway , and I wouldn’t have any trouble turning a profit on it. He also said that I could change it back to 32-40 if I wanted to, with some magical thing that I could put in my 3/8 drill , and do it myself. I was born on a thursday , but it wasn’t last thursday ! If nothing else , it was entertaining and mind boggling talking to this crook !
