I was at a gun show today and was looking at a Model 1873 and a couple of things caught my eye and I would like to hear some comments on this rifle. You will notice in the letter that it say "Barrel type : Octagon" and then further down it says "2 Round Barrel" ????? I didn’t take a photo of the barrel address but it was correct. Maybe the simple explanation is that it was Octagon barrel changed 2 (to) Round barrel.
You will notice in the photos (sorry for the quality) that there is no marking on the tang and when I checked with a light could see not indication that it had been polished off, wood to metal fit was good also. Seemed like a late number for no tang marking. Also the dust cover had a different thumb print but looked correct or maybe a it was a smooth cover and someone cut notches in it.

The dust cover is a repo. What interests me is the lack of model number for that serial number. What would tell me a lot is if you had a good side shot of the receiver to see what era of first model it truly is. The letter is just a short hand for "changed to round".

All the indicators for this gun is early first model, (1) screw in type lever latch (2) No pin in the trigger. I know I should have got more pictures but did take note of these two features. The short hand reference to barrel change is a first for me but have seen it referenced before on other guns as written out in long hand as "barrel changed to round or different length."
I wanted to see if it has a early first model receiver or a later first model receiver.
