Hi,
New to the forum but have been watching for several years.
Is there an approximate time or year noted, when Winchester stopped their color case hardening process? For example, if a person sent in a highwall for refurbishing, in the early 1900’s when would the casing of levers and breechblocks have stopped?
Also, did the method of case coloring ever change so that colors may have been different from one period to another? Thanks
Bob
Bob,
A Change of Manufacture notice was issued in August of 1901 that stated the case color finishing of the receiver frames was to be discontinued for all models (e.g. 1885, 1886, 1890, etc.). The ancillary parts continued to be case color hardened for at least another 12-years or so (e.g. hammers, levers, etc.).
I do not know the answer to your last question, but in my observation, the answer is No, it did not change.

I would add that, as far as I know it never really changed. Yes you’ll get different results from different guns but that is just part of it.
But its evident (maybe even obvious) that when you compare Winchester’s CCH with other manufacturers that they each had there on way of doing things and that each companies was different in its own right.
Sincerely,
Maverick
