Gene,

That is CF (Cased Frame) in large letters, I have seen that on several 73’s and every time its been a cased frame gun. Judging from the finish on the tang it looks like your gun is blued.

Is that an F or maybe a B?

Thanks Bob, you are correct that the receiver is blue. Here is the rifle in 38-55. I picked it up yesterday at the Forks of the Delaware show in Allentown, Pa. All numbers match.

Here are a couple more. The F appears to be a broken die.

It is very difficult with just the one small photo but my money says the rifle is refinished. Can you email several detail photos to me? What is the SN?

Thanks Bob and Michael,
I’m not seeing a refinish but I will post detailed pics for the debate. Can’t hurt
for the learning knowledge of the membership. The screw holes are sharp and not dished out in any way. There are good striations throughout the blue of the receiver. All the stamping is deep and strong. The barrel highs are sharp. I have resisted taking the rifle completely apart but now may have to.
I took several pics of the receiver lit from each side and head on so not to confuse the lighting shadows with dishing. I was away on vacation and my Cody membership lapsed but I’ll have them do a search when I renew.

Looks real to me too. I have no experience with the CF stamp outside of the 73’s so it will be interesting to see what the letter says. On the examples I gave they cover 1882 to 1889.

Thank you all but there is still the mystery of that stamp. I looked through all my books and didn’t come across it.

Nice looking rifle, the finish screams "Winchester" to me.

Are the screws blued? It is possible the rifle went back to Winchester for a refinish.

I am curious as to what it letters as also.

Certainly was not a cased colored frame rifle. The last case colored frame 1894 manufactured was serial number 97992.

There’s that nugget of information listed on page 131 of the Armax study. Nice find!
I’m still looking for that bottom tang stamp.

Gene,

The first one was not checkered but the last 2 are checkered. I have some notes on tang markings at home for a couple more but it won’t be until the weekend until I can check them.
