I would think if it had been in a fire hot enough to melt brass the stock and the wrap would also be gone. KR

IMHO this one looks like an old desert or pioneer trail rifle to me? Some of my pistols are known as "outhouse" pistols.
Dumped in the crapper when they malfunctioned.
I bought an 1860 Colt Army from a woman who’d dug in up in the garden of an old Victorian in CA. It was fully immersed in heavy grease, wrapped in a gunny sack. All the screws that put tension on the springs had been loosened. It didn’t look it at the time but it had been almost perfectly preserved. I removed the grease, tightened the screws up and the timing was perfect…
Probably a murder or robbery pistol?
I’ve also bought a couple of pistols found during remodel or demolition in the walls of old houses. I could go on but you get the idea.
Yes, if they could only talk…

Had fun with it at the GS this weekend. Everyone ask what was the story. I told them I was still working on a good one. I’ll look up the vendor I bought it from this Sun. morning and see if thee is any more known.

Indeed a great find for a fin. I bought a beautiful old cartridge belt at a flea market with 28 Henry cartridges in it for $100 in the 90’s. Guy had it laid out on the hood of his truck asking, "What kind of bullets are these?"
Relics are a whole different genre. Here are a couple of my wall hangers of which three are still loaded:

ohlode, In your right photo above, what is the item in the lower left corner of the case?

Just rambling:

The photo item looks like scissors with the blades broke off. I know you weren’t asking me, but I thought I’d chime in.

I’d like to know what’s in the photo in that same case. Looks like a Mammoth skull laying on it’s side.

I’ve heard outhouses hold murder weapons, not just broke guns. No need to toss a broke gun in the outhouse but a murder weapon . . . Also lots of whiskey bottles since you didn’t want the spouse to know you were hitting the sauce.

As to the Winchester with the melted brass elevator, was that gun then stored in the full cock position before the fire? Or could it have been cocked after a fire so hot that it melted the elevator?

I love these old guns. I went to the dug up guns museum in Cody this spring and saw some beauties. Even a nice ivory gripped Colt and some Winchesters and Colts that had some great engraving on them.

James, the item I was asking about isn’t scissors. I’ve seen those before and it’s made like you see it. I thought it might be a cigar cutter, but I don’t really know.

Back in the 80’s, I dug privies with two bottle collector friends. Besides the many whiskey and medicine bottles, we found whiskey jugs, doll parts, marbles, coins, trade tokens, lots of broken china and glassware, etc., and two old rusty relic pistols. Even found a civil war era cannon ball in one.

I own a property in the middle of nowhere, Colorado, that was first lived on by a white man in the 1860s. Next to my house is another building and I’m told that it sets on top of where the outhouse used to be for my house. If I ever get around to demoing that building you can bet I’ll be a digging. 😀

I’ve found lots of lithic tools and arrowheads while walking around, plus some old white man stuff while digging for maintenance, repair and improvements. I need to buy a metal detector. Maybe my dreams are right under my feet.

Lots of history here. The first guy to live here was killed in a gun fight in town, in June of 1884. Apparently he had on his person two Colt revolvers, an extra cylinder, a double barreled shot gun, 128 rounds of ammunition on a cartridge belt, and about $141.00. One of the Colts had pearl handles. That stuff is gone (Sheriff got it and gave it to friends) but I’m hoping he left a Winchester or two stashed around here somewhere. 😯

I think you are correct. Look at this: http://img1.etsystatic.com/000/0/5203190/il_570xN.306385321.jpg

That’s a Bing image search for "cigar cutter antique".

Thanks James, that’s it. Guess I was right, for once. I have one just like it in a drawer here somewhere. Don’t remember where I got it.
