I am more interested in pre 64 lever guns but I did stumble across this 9422 with a case colored reciever. I believe there were 500 made in 22 LR and 500 made in 22 Mag. I can get one at a pretty decent price, or so it would seem. They seem to be going for around 1350 to 1600 NIB. This one I found is not NIB, but apparently unfired and mint.
These were made to commemorate some Texas shooting organization I believe and have a TEX *** serial number
Would a rifle like this sort of be in the "commemorative" category ?
For purely collectiblity and investment purposes will this one suffer by not having the original box and tags.?
Any thoughts would be welcome or info on this particular rifle.
Dont hold back you wont hurt my feelings….

Steelslide,

My thoughts would be to buy into a "sure thing". That being a nice clean, original high condition M1886, M1873, M1892, M1890 , M61 or any other nice Winchester that has by past performance been a good to great value.

Buying a case hardened 9422 in my opinion is strickly speculation.

I’d put my money in a sure thing.

Would like to hear other thoughts.

STEELSIDE,
Let me give you the following observation. The 9422 you describe would definetly fall into the commerative catagory. I met a very nice gentleman
(WACA member) at the brs in august. He had a big pile of original boxes
and sleeves for the commerative guns which caught my eye.
It seems not having all the original stuff, including the box and
paperwork devalues these guns quite a bit, that was his opinion also.
To give you an idea, he offered me $500 for my OFW 38-55 pending
inspection, no box, no papers, not worth much more than a shooter.
The commeratives in general don’t seem to have as much interest
as the regular production and really haven’t gone up that much in value.
If you’re looking strictually as an investment I think you would do
better elsewhere. These are really neat little guns though, I doubt
you would regret the purchase down the road, Except the asking price
is way out there IMO.
Happy shooting,
B

!000 case co;lored 9422s in the Tex… serial range were made up for a large retailer in Texas as a special order, much like the Davidsons and Lew Horton guns. I believe that most were trappers. There were others that came from the factory but not with the TEX prefix.

Trapper rifles have become very collectable. When money become worth less, Winchesters will be worth more worthless money

If the purpose of your post is to show that there are more than 1000 case-colored 9422s out there – no contest.
The TEX serialed guns were done at the factory on a special order.
The Turnbull guns and commemoratives really don’t count in regard to my message.
As most on this forum know – I don’t do Commemoratives and have little knowledge about them other than they do exist.
It would appear that collectible guns (and anything collectible) will, somewhere down the line, be worth more than money on a piece-by-piece basis if the country doesn’t get it’s economic act together. In that regard, if the gun-grabbers win and a complete ban is enacted, (however un-feasible that may seem), we could be screwed. I will not get political – this is not the venue for that, but constant/consistent vigilance is always a wise choice.
Any political opinion will not be re-addressed – find a different forum.
Regards to all,
Bob

In the year before Winchester "closed shop" CDNN was selling the CC 9422s, rifles and trappers, for $499. No, I didn’t buy one. It was always "they’ll be there next month." 🙄 Laugh I beleive that there were more than 500 of each made.
