was browsing GI and saw this add for a Model 94 SRC. It says manufactured in 1923. It has a case hardened lever and butt plate. I can’t make out if the hammer is also case hardened. I have a high condition 94 made in 1921 and non of these parts are case hardened. Is this gun correct or did someone change the parts. I’d say the price is a little in left field link to add
Mike
I agree. Totally re-finished.
Look at the top tang, buffing marks going in all directions. The tang stamps are thin from this. Hard to see the proofs, but they look thin too. The usual carry wear on the balance point around the serial number is non existent.
I am tipping there is not photo of a serial number because it would clearly show a refinish job.
Caveat emptor!

A man can never have too many WINCHESTERS...
Well first of if the gun was mfg.’d in 1923 it should not have case colored hammer and lever and definetly not a case colored carbine butt plate. Taking from that and a few other discrepincies I see, My opinion is the gun is a fake . If this gun was truly in that original condition $12,000.00 would be questionable but hey. I recently sold a 30 wcf ser#921026 that was in new cond complete with the original hang tag.and other than the factory’s test I believe was unfired or at least never loaded thru , the loading port , this gun went for $10,000.00 Cdn.

That SRC is not even worth $1,200.
Winchester did not introduce “Proof Steel” barrels for the Model 94 until 1932, and, they were all equipped with the ramp style front sight. I have never seen (until now) a Proof Steel barrel with the old style post style front sight lug.
The upper tang has the Type 7 marking on it which was not introduced until late in the year 1937.
Winchester discontinued the Saddle Ring in the early 1930s (just before the change to Proof Steel barrels).
Color Case finishing of the lever, hammer, and butt plates was discontinued at least a few years before WW I.
Summation… a project gun, with almost nothing original.

Thanks everyone for your input on this rifle. I was not interested in buying it just interested in learning what is right and wrong for future acqusitions. My first red flag was the case color as I was suspect of its originality. I first looked at it on my IPhone and since had the opportunity to view it on my PC and noticed the polish marks on the tang that aren’t factory and the tang address was wrong for the era stated. Also the barrel address was wrong for the era but couldn’t pinpoint the dates until Bert stated it. Learning is your most valuable tool when considering purchasing an original Winchester.
Thanks Mike
