Saw this in a pawnshop today and noticed the muzzle was drilled out about an inch deep. What was this done for? Nice old take-down 25-20 otherwise. [http://s149.photobucket.com/user/Nascar_Fan_2007/media/cah012_zps6338d202.jpg.html

The only reason I can think of (and I’ve seen this in an original Model 1873) is that the last half inch or so of the bore had been damaged or worn and the person figured they could improve the accuracy by effectively shortening the barrel by inside drilling it back.

since the last inch of the rifling is the most important if the rifling has been damaged by aggressive cleaning rod use its common to counterbore to get back to good rifling.

This is very common on Mil Surp rifles. Though people tend to bore a much smaller hole.

I posted this a few years ago and went and bought the gun today. I got it home and found the gun broke down very easy and was tight when together. What I found was the gun is relined and rechambered to 218 Bee. Seems to be a great shooter however, I know it has very little collector value. It’s a shame too. Don’t find too many of these takedowns around my parts. Barrel is still marked for 25-20 with no indication of the change. I guess the liner was too short for the rifle the reason for the drilled muzzle.

Hello,

Could you please post or send me photos of the stamped writing on the rifle and the serial number so that  I can add it to my survey of the Model 1892’s?

http://forums.gunbroker.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=606355

Thanks so much for the help

Michael

Your welcome and thanks for your effort in the data collection. I have a few more 92’s, 73’s & a dozen or so old 94’s I can get the info from when I do my annual oil wipe down / group photo. That’s a cold, stay in day chore. Just like Christmas when they all come out to play.

NF,

I would love the 1892 data.  Send the 1894/94 stuff to Bert.

Merry Christmas!!
