Just wonderin’ what the popular opinion is; This ’86, ser# 86595,has the lever, bottom tang, trigger and butt plate nickel plated. It ‘s not mentioned in the letter but it’s been on there a long time. Any tell tale hints , from My pics, whether this is after market or correct. The rest of the gun ,wood , barrel etc. look good

Henry,
Your pictures are a little out of focus but from what I can see the lower tang did not come with that receiver. It was swapped from another gun and does not fit that receiver.

Would that mean the serial number also isn’t the correct one for that rifle?
Shoot low boys. They're riding Shetland Ponies.

Wow, good eye, and I agree! So, the serial number would indeed be incorrect for that particular rifle.

Yes. If I’m buying a 73 the first thing I look at is the serial number. Is the number legit? next I look at the tang to receiver fit to make sure the tang came with that receiver. Its like looking at a used car and the body line of the front fender is a 1/2″ higher than the door. Something is wrong with this car. The same thing with a tang to receiver fit. The lower tang was assembled in the receiver when they did the metal work on it so the body lines should match perfectly. If the third picture is a accurate representation of the gun, the lines don’t match up.

I have not seen a 86 tang finished different than the receiver. The lower tang has the serial number that matches the letter, you could have parts from two guns. The nickle is plated without copper flash which is era correct, serial number looks good. Maybe some one plated the gun when new and later some one swapped receivers. More pictures of the front half of the gun might give a clue. On a 86 usually the caliber is also stamped on the bottom of the barrel. T/R
Ya’ My photographic skills suck, the tang and receiver fit up pretty nice, at least as good as the others here, but I respect You’re opinions. I think what makes it look different is the nickel plating is peeling back from the edges where the tang meets the receiver and there’s a lot of crud in there. All the rest of the gun looks like it’s the way it was built, and is in nice shape. The inside of the butt plate is unpolished nickel and the screws are nickeled. If it’s not factory, and I’m not sayin’ it is, it was done a long time ago, with all the hard grease and handling “crud” in the metal gaps it obviously wasn’t done yesterday.

Henry, The last set of pictures make me think it all came together and was nickel plated back in the era. Maybe more parts were plated than have nickel on now and they flaked clean? It was common to do nickel trim, leave the barrel and tube blue. More questions than answers. The pictures don’t show Bubba type work.T/R

Try to keep the camera a little farther from the subject so it can focus. If you are using a cell phone tap the screen, a small box will appear, take your fingers and make the box bigger or littler. This is zoom. Also this box may show a light bulb which indicates you need to use a flash.
Chuck, I use a tablet. TR, I’m kind of thinking along that way, that is to say the gun has all the original parts and for some reason had those parts plated . And not being mentioned on the letter was probably done after purchase, and who knows why. There is no traces of plating any where else on the gun, and the rest of the finish I’m sure is original.

Tablet, cell phone or digital SLR camera. There is a minimum distance that the lens can focus. Stay back a bit and use the zoom feature.
