Well I guess I’m buying those open tops along with a few other ’73’s as a package deal. I think this one is a pretty good one for a early 1st model. The bore in this gun is as good as any ’94 I have, and I don’t think the guns been doctored in any way. What can You tell Me about the tang sight, I think it’s been added. All well informed comments are appreciated. This ’73 business is fairly new to Me , that is in any great depth and there is a wealth of knowledge here on the forum.

Henry,
Looks like a good first model. The sight is a Graduated peep which did come on them. The only thing I can see is the set trigger screw has been replaced with a aftermarket screw.

Good eye Bob, I never noticed the screw. Should I replace it with one from another gun?
If you have a lesser gun you can trade with, I would but be very careful that they both turn before you remove one. You don’t want to twist one off. Also it looks like where the first model set trigger screw is threaded into looks shinny. Has it been repaired? If it has it might not of been rethreaded with the correct thread to accept a original screw.

That is a fantastic looking 1st model ’73 Henry. You NEED to buy that one I reckon!
What does a first model 1873 rifle, with that sort of condition, go for over there these days?
And Bill, yours is beautiful too! I also have a very similar glass cased scene with the small white swans like yours. It was my grandmothers, maybe from China?

Yea Chris I got them bought , 3 first models, 2 of them open tops, and 3 3rd models, 2 of them in 38-40. I.m kind of hoping the early 1st model will sell in the $7500.00 U.S. range, it is a pretty nice one and I will replace the repro trigger screw as Bob pointed out. It has the best bore I’ve seen in a ’73 for a long time, the gun obviously didn’t get a lot of use.

That’s a nice early one and looks honest, a 145 year old survivor. I think any Winchester collector would be glad to pay $7500.
Don’t clean it, I have seen many of these old survivor’s down graded by cleaning, leave it show it’s age! T/R
Don’t worry , I won’t touch it , other than I will replace the set trigger screw and I may take the tang sight off of it, I think it was added recently as the metal finish under it indicates, and it’s not mentioned in the letter. What is one of those sights worth these days? The original wiping rod is in the buttstock.
