I’ve recently acquired a set of (4) 66/73 cleaning rods that I was assured were removed from and original to a 1873 rifle.

I also just purchased a 1873 SRC that’s in nice condition (especially for a carbine) and original. The (3) piece cleaning set came with the SRC and I’m told it’s original.

So my question is are either or perhaps both sets correct for 1873s? I’ve read that rifle and carbine cleaning rod sets are the same except rifles had (4) pieces and carbines have (3). I’ve also been told that rifle and carbine sets are different which the below would suggust. Also notice the the brass knobs are shaped slightly different. Both rods are the same diameter.

In each photo the SRC rod is on top:

Kevin,

The carbine sets are made longer so you only need 3. You can’t put a carbine set in a rifle butt, they will stick out. The rifles and musket sets are shorter.

Thanks Bob!

Any opinions as to if the above two cleaning rod sets are originals.

Kevin,

Most of the repo rods were made with the wrong size rods. The correct size rods is about .243″. The loop end slot on the repos were milled where the real ones were stamped out. Quite a few years ago someone made a run of repo rods that were perfect and with some artificial aging you couldn’t tell, they sold for $30 – $40 if I remember right. At that point I quite getting excited about cleaning rods.

Kevin,

What is the diameter of the shaft?  The ends of the rods look  like they are not “punched” to me. Bob ( 1873 man ) will know what you want.

Bob,

I think the rods I have are probably from the “correct” ones from years ago. I have seen repos with a proof mark on top of the brass tip!!  The repos have destroyed the rod market.

Walter,

I typoed the rod size, they should be about .234″.  The junk repos were made from commonly available 1/4″ rod. As far as the proof marked ones, I haven’t seen on in person.

Just curious, as the below style are not typical of other 1873 cleaning rods I have seen. Are these correct?

Kevin,

Those are not Winchester rods. The ones for a Carbine look just like a rifle set except they are a little longer so you only need 3.

Well you know that gun has a high capacity magazine so in some circles it could be a assault rifle.
