My friend offered me a model 54 22 hornet. It had a 12 power lischert (sic) scope, a lyman 48 ( he said) receiver sight, swivels and sling, checkered stock, nice bluing and beautiful stock Now the negatives. There were 2 D&T holes in barrel between receiver and sight, obviously for a scope.2 D&T holes left side of receiver and the bolt would fall out if held vertical. All of this for $1000. I declined based on comments made by Bert regarding non-factopy holes. Was I right or wrong? Don

Sounds like someone was messing with the sear which also serves as the bolt stop trying to adjust trigger pull. The Litschert, Lyman and beautiful, checkered stock are pretty valuable.
Of all the shortcuts taken in designing the 54 (and the 52), the worst. Maybe Timney makes a replacement trigger. The extra holes I wouldn’t worry about if I was buying the gun to shoot. But there ought to be a price adjustment to compensate for the trigger problem–I’d say $200 at least. A 12X scope is worth substantially less than a 20 or 25X, & Litscherts don’t generally sell for as much as Lymans or Unertls.
