Hello,

looked at a near mint 52B Sporter today,it has a cheesy Williams sight on the barrel with a screw(s) that attaches it to the barrel. Are these rifles drilled and tapped for scope mounts in the barrel?

No, none of the sporters had holes d/t’d on the barrel. The only sporter with a d/t’d receiver standard from the factory was the C model. All sporters were d/t’d on LH side of receiver for a Lyman 48F or 57FH(52B only).

Back in the day, some early 52s and some 52B models were fitted with after-market sporter stocks. Landis makes mention of such conversions in ".22 Caliber Rifle Shooting". I think Winchester would sell a 52 Sporter stock as an after-market item.
