I have been offered an 1892 Winchester 25-20 with shotgun butt, 1/2 magazine, pistol grip stock BUT rebarreled with 65 barrel, A 64 Winchester 32 special, and a model 58 in decent shape(small crack in stock which has been repaired) which looks like Winchester made with a 5/4″ board. A box of 25-20 ammo and 32 special ammo all for $1600. Should I even consider this deal? Don

Don,

Depending on the graded condition, the Model 64 could be worth that much all by itself. On the surface (without actually seeing the rifles), it does not seem like a bad deal. What is the serial number on the Model 64? Is it a standard rifle, or a Deer Rifle? Barrel length?

Bert, my comments on the 92 are wrong. I confused them with another gun the seller had. The 64 is serial no. 1239583. Barrel is 24″ and is 32 W.S. Madis’ book indicates 1942 vintage. It is a standard rifle (darn it) in good condition. Don

Don,

Do yourself a favor, and disregard the DOM information published by G. Madis… almost none of it is accurate.  Model 64 S/N 1239583 was manufactured in August, 1940.  It should have a “W” stamped on the receiver frame below the serial number.

I found the “W” but it is very faint for these old eyes. Is the W significant in any way? BY the way I now have the rebarreled 92 (Winchester 65  2 5-20 barrel) I would like to know if left factory as 25-20. Is this of any interest to any 92 survey?

Thanks, Don

Don,

The “W” was stamped on the receiver frames from February 1939 – February 1941 as a quality control check for the new bluing formula used on the receiver frames.  If the “W” is real faint, the odds are extremely high that the rifle has been refinished.

Michael (2bit) can possibly help you with the rebarreled Model 92.
