Once you learn what to look for you will spot the tells immediately. For me it was the case color/metal finish wasn’t right.

Here is an 1887 vintage round barrel 1873 with worn and faded case hardened finish.

Here’s another example of mine for comparison from 1883, also round barrel and 1/2 mag. Fairly strong case colors on this one.
