I’m looking for some information on a Model 88 .284 I have owned for the last 40 years. Serial number is 128,6xxA. The gun is in .284 win. My questions relate to the gun being manufactured from what I have found online in the very end of 1961. The action anyway. The 88 .284 didn’t come into being until the very end of 1962 or early 1963 around serial number 139,600. Again all information I have found online. From what I have learned replacement barrels were never made available for the Winchester 88. Also the A at the end of the serial number supposedly is to designate a factory replacement action and barrel. The gun also has the post 1963 basket weave stock on it. Thought this one might have been one they played with while working the bugs out before introducing the .284 in 1963. Any information or ideas anybody would have on it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Scott,
Unfortunately, there are no available factory records that we can use to research and answer your questions. That stated, there were a few Model 88 enthusiasts that wrote and published bits & pieces of information about them.
What I can tell you, is that the “A” suffix on the serial number does not designate a factory replaced action and barrel. Winchester used the “A” to denote a design or production change to the receiver group. The “A” suffix is found on all serial numbers after a specific date (I do not know exactly when it first appeared).
In regards to the introduction date for the 284 Win cartridge, I am willing to bet that it was in the latter half of 1962. A perfect example of Winchester’s lag time between the actual production date, and announcing it to the public, was the Model 1894 in 32 W.S. (Winchester Special). The first Model 1894 (by date) made in 32 W.S. was serial number 107731, received in the warehouse on 10/5/1901. Winchester did not publically announce the 32 W.S. until the June 1902 catalog… 10-months later!
Another frequent occurrence, was the use of an older receiver to build a later production gun. There are many recorded instances were a receiver frame sat in the assembly room for several years before it was finally used to assemble a rifle, and then sent to the warehouse. I suspect that was the case with your Model 88. A late production pre-64 receiver was used to build a post-63 production rifle.

Thank you for taking the time to reply Bert. Your theory makes sense. Most of the information I got on the gun came from this write up.

I may try to hunt down a collector or two of the 88 and learn what I can.
Thank you again for your time Bert

Murray’s great book on the 88 is currently available on eBay for about $35 and Gunbroker for $20. I think these are the last new copies available as Mr. Murray has passed away and there are no plans to reprint any of his books. I believe the 4th printing (of the first edition) is the latest version but am not positive.
