OnlineI’ve never heard of a “Expert Model”. If there is such a thing, I’d be interested in knowing more about it. But fathom its someone’s imagination going for a run.
Sincerely,
Maverick

Yes, there was (is) an actual Model 06 “Expert” variation. Winchester introduce the “Expert” model in the 1924 catalog. They were made with a special pistol grip butt stock, a special shaped slide handle stock, and most were nickel trimmed or full nickel plated.
This is an example of a nickel trimmed Model 06 Expert rifle – (1) Half Nickel Winchester 06 Expert Pump Rifle. – May 10, 2025 | Poulin Antiques & Auctions In Me (liveauctioneers.com)

OnlineHere’s the pic of the pair of custom “Expert” 1906 rifles presented to Nana Gable (AKA Nan Aspenwall) in December 1922. She followed Annie Oakley in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. The rifles pictured have nickel plated receivers & barrels. I own one of them. I won “Best Single Gun” display award at last summers Cody Show. Now I’m curious if these were the beginning of the Expert model? Bert, what do you think? I didn’t find any reference in the Cody library regarding this, but the timing seems more than a coincidence. Bert in your research, have you seen anything that references what started the “Expert” line? The article’s title sure is interesting….

OfflineBen,
In answer to your question, No, there are no references that can tell us exactly when or what the first serial numbers were for the Expert model. Based on what I have encountered in the past 40+ years, the early Experts were in the lower 500,000 serial number range (late 1917 to early 1918). Why Winchester did not catalog them until 1924 is a mystery.

FYI at local gun show today saw a 1906 Winchester Expert model as per seller. SN 554596. Nickle plated receiver, blue round barrel, unchecked pistol grip stock. I thought reblued but seller says no. Nickle plating is peeling from receiver. He is asking $900. Don
Don, does it look anything like the one pictured in Bert’s link above? $900 doesn’t sound too bad to me if it’s nice. The nickel finish flaking is pretty normal for all the one’s I’ve seen.

OnlineWell good to know that there was a factory term Expert in use by the company. Half the time folks will use such terms and they don’t exactly mean what the factory meant regarding an configuration. The term “Deluxe” being the standard misused one all the time.
Sincerely,
Maverick
P.S. Typically when I think of the term Expert and WRACo, only the Shot Shells come to mind.

First time I ran into an “Expert” it was actually a standard gun. I think the label is sometimes misapplied and that adds to the confusion.
