OfflineI think this is a pretty special rifle. It hasnt seen the light of day in decades. How much does the reciever sight hurt the value? Any thoughts or comments appreciated.

Its a beautiful and rare flat side pistol grip rifle. A very nice piece indeed. What exactly am I seeing on the right side of the receiver? Are those scratches? Forge marks or what?

OnlineThe sight is a Redfield No. 102, first offered in the early 1930s. Unfortunately, the extra holes D&T to mount it are a significant hit to the value. It is a very uncommon Fancy Sporting Rifle though, and as such, it will still have interest among the Model 1895 collectors.

Thank you for the input sir. I plan to just shoot and enjoy it. I’d like to install a period correct rear sight back on it and remove the reciever sight and put some plugs in the holes. Any suggestions on finding a rear sight?
also can you see where they joined a piece of wood on the back of the rear stock near the butt plate?
Ever see that before?

Do you have a Cody factory letter for this rifle? It appears that it may have originally been a Shotgun Butt that was converted to a rifle butt.

I sent off for a letter and will let you know what it says when I get it.

OfflineThe receiver modification is unfortunate but at least it’s an older mod so that helps for some collectors. Beautiful wood but the butt modification also has a very significant impact on the collector value. Nice rifle, I’d leave that rear sight on there and shoot it!

Bert, I wonder about that? The added piece almost matches the grain for the rest of the stock? It is extremely hard to find such a close match. I wonder if the added piece was once an original piece? Rifle, shotgun, then back to rifle?

Hard to say, which is why I want to see the Cody letter for it.
