I have a 1894 Sporting Rifle ½ Octagon Barrel Takedown in 30-30 made in 1913. About how many were made in 1913 and how many total production. Thanks in advance.

Winchester manufactured a total of 54,023 Model l1894s in the year 1913.  Of that number, I have documented (381) in my research survey.  Of the (381) in the survey, (197) are Carbines, and (184) are Rifles.  Of the (184) Rifles, (60) are Take Downs.  So, with those documented survey numbers for the year 1913, the extrapolation works out as follows.

197 = 51.7% Carbines

184 = 48.3% Rifles

60/184 = 32.6% Take Down Rifles

54,034 x 48.3% = 26,093 total rifles

26,093 x 32.6% = 8,506 Take Down Rifles

For the benefit of my research survey, what is the serial number on your Tae Down Sporting Rifle?  The odds are very good that it is either in the 597500 – 600700 serial range, or in the 611700 – 614700 serial range.

That is one of my favorite configurations: half octagon, half magazine, take down. I have an 1894 with the same options.  It shows lots of use, consistent with how much the previous owners liked hunting with it. What a nice old Winchester!

The date of manufacture is late May 1913.

Is the barrel 26-inches long, or is it 24-inches?

No, not yet, and I am not sure that it can be published in the traditional sense.  I have the survey entirely inside an Excel spreadsheet, and it currently would occupy 900+ printed pages.

Bert, thanks for the info. Out of the 8,506 take down rifles, do you have a caliber breakdown, how many were half octagon, and how many were 24”?
Thanks in advance,

Dale,

Your Take Down rifle brings the survey total for the year 1913 to (61) rifles.  The attached picture below is a snap shot of all the 1913 production Take Downs that I have documented thus far in the survey.  With just (61) samples for the year 1913, it is not a large enough sample to accurately predict (extrapolate) the total number with the criteria you asked about.

Henry,

Very nice ELW TD ! Cool

Thanks for posting it, and I have it added to the survey.  Per the PR records, it was manufactured in November 1913.

Awesome… thanks for posting it.  It was manufactured almost dead center in the year 1913 (late June).

Please keep them coming!
