I have recently found a 1894 short rifle with a 14” barrel. To my knowledge this rifle has yet to be sent in to the ATF Firearms & Ammunition Technology Division. This gun appears to me to be a 100% correct, but is outside the Cody letter range. It has 7 3/8” forearm, mag tube hanger split in distance between the end of barrel and forend cap, and rear sight seat 4” for front of the receiver. They ask to send rifle and any supporting information to them. Has anyone done this before and have any pointers before I ship it off? What is the best reference book for short rifles so I can add that for my supporting information.
Thanks Matt
Matt,
What is the S/N on the subject rifle? Can you send me pictures of it?

Bert it’s 643262. I also sent you a few pictures.
I have sent 2 Marlin 1894 carbines with 15″ barrels in that were out of the available serial range, noting short forearms and pics of known short carbines and they were sent back in a few weeks with clearance letters. If their correct, it doesn’t seem to be a problem. I talked to others and they had the same results.

Matt,
I sent you a document (letter) that should help you with the BATF inspection and clearance letter.

Thanks for all the help! I will be sending it off this week and will update the group as to how it goes.

It was easier in the past. You could just send ATF photographs and a description of a trapper and they would classify it as a C&R and remove it from NFA status.
That’s interesting to know. I always assumed they had to have their hands on it before they would make their pronouncement. I’m not surprised things have changed.
