In BR’s book he addresses October 14 but what about this. Is this an odd ball ❓

Hello Gene,

The date should be August 21, 1894. I thought Bob had a sentence regarding this date also but I am away from my reference materials.

In Renneberg’s book Winchester Model 94 on page 133 he states "In the serial range of approximately 345,000 to the low 400,000s some barrels were inadvertently marked with the Aug. 14 patent date; this is a true factory error and is quite rare.

If anyone on the forum has one of these rifles or carbines with the incorrect date, I would like to start keeping track of them. I would like the full s/n and a photo of the gun and also a photo of the barrel address. Any help would be appreciated.

I’ve only seen that error addy on carbine and round barrels, which makes me think only one roll die was made with the mistake.

you may be right about the roll die. The 4 I have seen photos of were all carbines and the one I have is the ELW shown above a couple post ago. All round barrels.

Question for you. Do you think the October 14, 1884 error date shown in BOBR94’s book was actually done with the model 1886 or 1892 die by mistake?

The example in Renneberg’s book is actually the 1892 roll mark where October is fully spelled out, I’m surprised he didn’t know that.

On the late 86 barrel addy, the October is shortened to OCT and there is a second patent date JAN 20 1885, the same patent date that’s on the 1886 lower tang.

Actually I surprised that there are not more out there, the original roll dies that I have and the pics I’ve seen of period roll dies, they are not labeled. It would be very easy to make a mistake.

A humble start to this survey has the following results.
s/n 359137 SRC 30 WCF July, 1907
s/n 359712 22" RB ELW 30 WCF July, 1907
s/n 369284 SRC 38-55 Oct, 1907
s/n 369334 SRC 30 WCF Oct, 1907
s/n 373316 22" RB ELW 30 WCF Oct, 1907
s/n 381435 SRC 32-40 Dec, 1907

This is all I have for now and will not do any updates untill I have a much better list.

Paul

I did not include the one from Bob’s book with a s/n of 887084, June, 1919, which is way out of sequence that he explains on page 106 (2nd edition) of his book.
