My dad bought this 1892 at a local gun show a few months ago. It’s outside of the letterable range, but I’m convinced that it’s factory work. This is the only one I’ve seen with an octagon threaded cap (which indexes 100% correct when tight). All others I’ve seen have the round knurled threaded cap that seems to prevail on rifles threaded outside of the factory. Just looking for opinions as to this rifle’s originality.
Twobit,
I took plenty of pictures so you can add it to your 1892 survey. In your opinion, do you think this came from the Winchester factory or done on the outside as an after-market add-on? Also, per your survey, how “rare” is this option (if factory work)?
Thanks,
Don
I’ve never seen one like that…factory or say by Maxim, but it is kind of neat! I have some Maxim Silencer printed material on file somewhere that explains the methods used for the various calibers that matches the typical interrupted threads that indicate factory work, and continuous threads that represent non-factory work.
Added: Don, I’m pretty sure that Bert can shed some light on this issue. That sure is a good looking rifle!

Hello,
I have seen several 1892’s that have a threaded muzzle for the Maxim silencers but this is the only one where the thread covering is octagonal. Somebody obviously spent a fair amount of time and effort but I do not think that the effort was at the factory. The rest of the rifle is quite nice though. And thanks so much for the effort on the photos.
