Hi new to this site I just purchased a 1892 Winchester in .25-.20 caliber nickel serial number 6493xx… I got it from an older gentleman that said his father gave it to him as a kid and he hasn’t shot it since he said he just moved it from closet to closet over the years and never cleaned or oiled it. It needs to be cleaned up bad heavy dust comb webs and surface rust on top of the nickel
Looking for more info on this rifle also if I ordered a cody letter what would it tell me

I’ll try and get it cleaned up and putva few pics
Careful when you “get it cleaned up.” You don’t want to destroy any value in the process.
Polishing on a nickel gun can quickly lower its value. You want the dull flaky nickel.

The gun is not nickeled. It appears to of been buffed and I think I see traces of blue.

You have a Model 1892 rifle that has, unfortunately, seen better days! Some edges are rounded and not as sharp as they should be. That indicates buffing prior to refinish. The focal areas that are black are remnants of the reblue. The areas that are silver is simply bare steel and it gives the illusion of a nickel finish. Also, rust is evident, furthering the cause that your rifle is in extremely poor condition.
There is no collector value. Your rifle is a “shooter”.

I have a few old civil war guns that are silver plated kind of looks like that or polished nickel it’s something over the steel
Rust, patina, grime…
These are the most common on well-used guns. Sometimes nickel, rarely silver.
