“14 in 44 WCF caliber and 41 in 38 WCF”  That is interesting.

With a bit of time to kill this evening I dug into my data derived from the first 288,000 (almost) Model 1892 ledger entries.  With regard to 12 inch barreled configurations, they were all SRC’s. There were 56 total of which 1 was in 25-20 WCF caliber, 14 in 44 WCF caliber and 41 in 38 WCF caliber.  Any way that you slice it they are a rare configuration for sure.
I hope this helps

Thanks Michael!

That’s very interesting information.  I would never dreamed they made 56 12 inch carbines.  And of course, there were probably a few more beyond the #288,000 number and then some into the non-letterable range.  Again, many more than I would have thought.

I have found 5 additional 12 inch SRC’s while doing my survey that are above SN 288000.  2 of those are in 38 WCF and the other 3 are 44 WCF.  Yes, there were more made than people think.

A strange configuration indeed. If you wanted a compact rifle a 14″ would make more sense. Hold a round or 2 more, better sighting radius, very little larger. After all, you are not going to put it in your pocket.

I am going to look at this gun. It appears only one 12″ 1892 has been entered in the C&R list. #408070. Hopefully it is in the letter range. I don’t know how difficult getting one reclassified as a C&R is now.

I am not aware of any published statistical data for the Model 1892 like there is for the Model 1894 (ARMAX Vol 5).  Michael my have an idea based on his research survey.

Good morning,

You do not want that rifle.  Here are the images that I have of it.  I first saw it in October of 2024 with checkered non original wood on it.  Here is the listing from Hunters Unite in BC.  https://www.icollector.com/Winchester-Custom-1892-Saddle-Ring-Carbine-44-40-Caliber_i54453101   It sold to “harkerlee” for $1100.

The second time it appeared was in January of 2025 with some really beat up “original wood”  on it.  In addition, the barrel does not measure as 18 inches based on the one tape measure image.  The rear sight has been changed between the two offerings.  Do you have current images of the gun?  I would be interested in seeing them.

After a bit of number crunching here is a partial answer.  Within the first 288,000 Model 1892 manufactured there were 71 total carbines made with 18 inch barrel.  64 were chambered for 44 WCF and 7 chambered for 25-20 WCF.  Beyond SN 288000 to the end of production I have found 8 additional SRC’s.  1 in 25-20 WCF, 3 in 38 WCF, and 4 more in 44 WCF.  There is also one carbine (without a sling ring) in 32 WCF caliber.  Any way you slice it they make up a VERY small percentage of of the total production.
