Hello,

It should be a Type 3 style stamp.  2 lines of print of equal length and located on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the rear barrel band.  Exactly as in the attached photo but on top of the barrel vs. left side as shown.  The caliber stamp will be on the left side just behind the rear sight.  Rarely on top of the barrel in this range.

Thanks twobit!

Glad to help.  Could I get the full SN and a few photos so that I can add the rifle into the research survey I am working on?  https://winchestercollector.org/forum/winchester-research-survey-discussion/winchester-model-1892-all-rifle-survey/#p44381

Thanks

Michael

Hi Guys,

G’day from South Australia!

I’m new here but have an 1892 Trapper in 44WCF. Saddle ring. Serial number 208244. It has no barrel markings at all. Can I assume it has had a barrel change at some time? The patina on the barrel matches the rest of the rifle perfectly.

It is very functional and is amazingly accurate at 100m. Cycles smooth as butter. It’s the oldest Winchester I have.

It is not for sale, but any ideas what value I should put on this for my insurance policy?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Jay-dog,

It is also possible that the original markings were buffed off if the gun was refinished at some time.  Can you post several images of the gun?
