OfflineHey everyone, I am new here and new to collecting Winchester rifles I have two Winchester shotguns an 1897 and model 12. I am currently looking at an 1892 44-40 online and I was wondering what a good price would be for it the bluing looks good overall the seller says the bore is clean and shiny the barrel is 20 inches long but the forearm and stock both have cracks I know this devalues the gun but by how much? most of them I find are I feel fairly high around 1400 and I could possibly get this one for 1100 with purchasing it and shipping, taxes and transfer fee. I am 24 and an older friend and gunsmith says the 44-40 is the one he would want if he was looking for one vs the other calibers and that if I find one he has a colt 44-40 he will give me to go with it. is 1100 a decent price or is that too much ? and what was the 44-40 caliber used for? thanks to everyone for your help!

Is the Model 1892 you are looking at a Carbine or a Rifle? Do you have pictures of it? Generally speaking, $1,100 for an original Model 1892 in 44 WCF is a cheap price, even with the issues you mention.

I will try to upload some pictures of it. and I am not sure but it is supposed to have a 20 inch barrel so I’m guessing it is a carbine? and it was made around 1903![]()

OfflineIt is a Carbine (and it should have a saddle ring on the left side of the receiver frame). Based on what I can, it has been reblued and most likely a replaced forend stock. The rear barrel band is installed backwards indicating the front end of the gun has been worked on.
If you are looking for a “collector” grade gun, that is not the Model 1892 you want to buy. If you are looking for a “shooter” grade gun, the $1,100 price tag is reasonable enough if it has a nice clean bore.

Hello,
You are asking the ight question at the right time. BEFORE you buy the gun!! Too many folks buy one and then ask what it is worth. That is a mistake. What is the serial number of the rifle? Also please get clear photos of the stamped writing on the barrel. A replaced barrel is another value deduction. Not only is the barrel band screw inserted from the wrong side but it appears that there is a filled hole in the wood forward of the band. I would be skeptical of the shotgun butt stock being original also. $1100 might sound cheap until you find out it is a collection of parts and worth 2/3rds of that.

Hello Michael the serial number is 210140 i ran it through the dates section on this website and it says 1903 i hope i have not made a mistake as i just bought it last night (it was in an online auction so either had to strike or not) the barrel does say 44 wcf on it if that makes a difference in your opinion what do you think its worth based off the pictures i know you cant make but a so so guess with the picture quality. if it makes a difference i plan on this being an occasional shooter not just a hang on the wall collector gun.
also do you or anyone else know how to set up notifications when someone replys to a post ? if i hadn’t checked this manually i wouldn’t know anyone replied !
