Offlinei just bought a new to me Winchester 1892 32 WCF it was built in 1911 i was hoping i could get a value on it and maybe some opinions on if i payed too much for it. the shop wanted $1150 for it and i was able to get it for $900 to start it needs a very good cleaning. the rifling looks good in it i took it to my gunsmith today and he says it is missing an ejector and the parts that go with it. but that it seems to be a good gun other than that the action is tight there is no bluing left on it to speak of it is all in the white if i am using that correctly no cracks in the wood either. the octagon barrel and the Butt plate really did it for me and the first two digits on the serial number is the month and day of my birthday so that didn’t hurt. haven’t tried to shoot it since the ejector is missing and i also don’t have any bullets but everything seems to work like it should.

Some folks I know who enjoy rustic decor would like to have your rifle for a wall-hanger. I hope you can get it shooting, your gunsmith’s report is not very encouraging.

My grand father told me that if you don’t have anything nice to say then shut your mouth. But I would HIGHLY suggest that you consult some of our more esteemed and knowledgeable collectors before you buy in the future.
I kinda like this 1892. A possible shooter with a truckload of character. Only problem is there isn’t much demand for a rifle like this one. I really like the cartridge as well, I would have been hard pressed to walk away from it but it’s best to focus on guns with more condition, less character.

Bought it yesterday and started refinishing the wood I don’t mind the patina/ character look to it Just got it finished and cleaned up good and thought I would post it again with a new picture only have one because its dark out and I just got it put back together.

I have a thread where I cleaned up 92 stocks. Check that out. Everyone with experience chimes in. The Winchester Wizards walked me through the process. You need to take it apart and take some good pictures of all the markings. My rifle was a carbine , looks like you have a rifle. Need a barrel measurement. These guys will tell you if it’s been cut. Price really only matters to you. Obviously you bought it. Clean that old girl up correctly and you will have a nice riffle.

The barrel is 24” long and I assume you mean the markings on the bottom of the barrel is there anymore I need to look for? This is my first octagon barreled gun it doesn’t seem to have the normal markings on it like my round barreled ones do but I haven’t been collecting Winchesters long and don’t know anything about that kind of stuff yet. and mostly like my guns for the historical aspect and to be able to shoot them more than them being perfect I have a few guns like that and I am too scared to use them in fear of scratching them up.

What did you do to clean the stocks?
It may be frowned on here but I sanded the stocks other than the black marks/scratches still on it there is no cracks or anything on it. I used hydrogen peroxide to try to lift some of the stains and it worked on some didn’t work on others and then cleaned it with dawn dish soap which seemed to help some too rinsed it off and dried it after it dried i put spray polyurethane on it I have had good luck with it in the past and I figured when I bought it it would never be a high value gun and that refinishing it could only improve it. I am working on a Stevens 235 and a Stevens 311 as well and I’m very happy with the results on the 311 the 235 has a new rough stock that will take a lot of work before I get to the finishing part. As you can tell I love a project.

You definitely have a project. I was talking about taking the fore end off and looking for the barrel date. What did you use to sand it?
First all my sanding is done by hand and I cut maybe 4 inch by 4 inch squares from a sheet of sandpaper I use 150 first then 220 then 400 and 1000 after that I put my polyurethane and I haven’t been doing it very long yet to figure out exactly how I want to do it but on this particular gun I sprayed the polyurethane on it and sanded it lightly with 400 and 1000 between each coat and sprayed 4 coats but I will probably add more coats. On a Stevens 311 I did I put polycrylic with a fine brush did the same sanding steps as before and then the last 4 coats were with polyurethane I put 8 coats total 4 polycrylic and 4 polyurethane and it was really smooth not perfect like I’ve seen other peoples work but I’m experimenting right now trying to find what works best for me.

This is a picture of the barrel markings under the fore end and spot where the missing “ejector” is and I got to researching it myself and i believe
the part I am missing is actually the right cartridge glide I assume the screw fell out of the side of the gun and it fell out at some point he said that it was the ejector but that is still in it. Sorry the pictures are so bad I don’t have anyone to hold the gun while I hold the flashlight and camera
