Hey all,  as you can see this is my first posting.

I have come down to me an 1892 that I hope some light can be shed upon.

If I’m looking correctly the serial no. is L 68752.

The rifle is chambered in 44 WCF and the barrel is full octagon.  It is a little disconcerting when you first glance at it as the barrel (accurately) measures 16 and 1/4 inch.  I’m not sure what the accepted method of measuring the mag tube is but hopefully one of the following will do it,  from the forward edge of the loading gate to the end of the tube measures 12 7/8 inches, or the end of the tube extends approx 1/2 inch past the end of the foregrip cap.

The condition of the barrel is just a bit past it’s prime.  The muzzle is counter bored,  the bore is shiny but I don’t notice much in the way of rifling and just south of the rear sight there is a pretty noticeable bulge.

I’ve been acquainted with this gun for the past 45 years and want to do only right for it.  I’d love to find a good and correct barrel for it but I think the day is gone for that.

Opinions?  Thanks and hope to have something to contribute to this forum/site.

The standard barrel length for a Model 1892 was 24-inches, and with a full length magazine tube under it. I highly suspect that the barrel and magazine tube have been shortened (cut down) on your rifle.

The serial number is actually 168752, and indicates that it was manufactured mid-year 1901. As such, it can be researched or lettered by the Cody Firearms Museum records office, and the original as built configuration verified.

Finding an original barrel won’t be easy, but it is not impossible.

jban,

Can you post several photos of the gun and the areas of stamped writing on it?  I can comment further with that information. http://forums.gunbroker.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=606355

Ah,  as a later gun, 1901 vs 1892 I think it might be a reach replacing the 2 pieces and associated parts.  Might be just as well corner it for the time being,  I have other projects.

I was hoping that the “L” was something other than a “1” and when I put the sn in with the L the DOM came up as 1892.

Thanks for the reply and information.
