Although it seems to match the Cody letter this rifle just doesn’t look quite right to me. Looks refinished (roll stamps are light), the magazine tube looks longer than the barrel, the muzzle diameter looks too large, and looks like the muzzle is crowned. Also, looks like wrench marks near the rear sight and the lever, hammer, and butt-plate are blued rather than case-colored. What do the experts think? Would be a really rare gun if it hadn’t been monkeyed with.

The rifle has several other problems. In photo 22 you can see the repair to the butt stock on the left side just below the tang. The lever and hammer are “blued” and should be case hardened. You mentioned the butt plate should be case hardened also. The barrel address and the caliber stamp are both on the shallow side. Yes a very rare configuration for a sporting rifle but definitely tampered with.
