Sorry to interject here, I know I am not as seasoned a collector as you both and I can say I have seen exactly 2 big 50’s in real life. I am only mad that i had to pass on the one the winchester grove has listed currently as I believe it was sold at a local auction and I shied away because of the broken stock and the ill fettered letter as far as if it really was a factory conversion. Listed as 45-90, my favorite caliber. Btw Steve 004, I think I’m going to take that 86 in 45-90 with a checkered trigger to VA deer camp this year for some fun! No hunting in the rain with it tho, lol! 

  

OCR – your .45-90 you are referring to would be just the rifle to take to deer camp!  I would do it but like you, I would not take it out in the rain – or, if it even looked like rain

My current and only 1885 HW SS made in 1887 is chambered in 45-60 WCF.

At one time in my basement gun cave sat an 1886 chambered in 50 EX along with a 1885 in 50-100-450.

If we could only  retain now what we let go THEN.

  

I feel your pain.  But it is cool that you got to own two .50’s and exceptionally cool that one of them was a .50-100-450.  I once owned a .50-110 with a 32 inch barrel.  I sorely miss it. Remember we all temporary custodians of these pieces.  Even those pieces that I still have my hands tightly wrapped around… my ownership is temporary

No, someone else was thoughtful enough to let his heirs pass most of the guns in my collection to me. I want someone else to cherish them when I’m gone. I’ll be cremated when the time comes, no need to waste good wood to bury my carcass.
