I have recently acquired an 86 in 45-90 that letters with a 36″ barrel but was cut down at some point to 26″. I am sure this was a true 36″ barrel as the current magazine hanger is located 3/4″ farther back from the muzzle than a standard 26″ and it does not have pin in it nor provisions for one. My question is does anyone know what the dimension should be across the flats for a barrel at muzzle if one was to cut a barrel down. I noticed immediately it seemed smaller than a standard barrel and upon measuring, with a steel rule it is appox 1/16″ smaller. thanks.
So think I’ve answered my own question. I have come to find out that the longer 86 barrels were forged with .007″ per inch taper, where as the shorter less than 30″ were forged with a .005″ per inch taper. there for at .002″ x 26″ = .052. which we all know is almost a 1/16″.so if you cut down a 36″ barrel to 26″ the diameter across the flat would in fact be .052″ less. So I am now 100% sure that this gun was in fact a 36″ er.
