I picked up a Model 1886 pistol grip in 33WCF with about 100 rds of factory ammo last year for a very low price for an 86. Sounds too good right. The problem is that sometime in the past 100 years someone ground down the upper and lower tangs fit a new stock possibly from a 64 or 65 type rifle. It was a neat enough job and the rifle shoots well but the serial number is short two numbers 1357?? somewhere between 135700 and 135799.
Using the WACA site I found that all 1886 serial numbers in this range are 1905 guns. I contacted Cody and Jesi was able to do a quick check on all 1886 rifles in 33WCF with a pistol grip non deluxe stock and came up with three possibilities but she needed more information before a definite match was decided. To make matters worse that same person who tried to make a 86 into a 71 may have shortened the Magazine tube also which further complicates things. There appears to be a blank placed in the dovetail where the front Mag tube hanger would be. The blank was done by a someone who seems to know what they were doing for it is easy to miss. (Could this be Factory). The front fore stock looks original and not deluxe.
I guess the question is I need to narrow it down the one rifle in that range so I can see what it left the factory as. ( I’m trying to send some photos hope they are not too big my first try but they sow detail)
I would have to agree with Mike, The factory would have replaced the barrel rather than repair it. Have you pulled the wood to see if it has any other stamps that might help ID it?

I don’t think I have seen the proof mark on the barrel on the side like that before. In that serial range (I have one from 1909), I don’t know if they went out like that at all. I don’t have my .33 readily accessible to compare with right now. If the stock was replaced, you don’t know for sure if the original did or did not contain checkering. The forearm suggests not, but you don’t know for sure. You also don’t know, since the barrel is likely replaced, if this was originally a .33 or a .45-70. Given the inherent problems with this particular firearm, it has minimal value. I would shoot it and not spend much effort into learning more about it, and trade it up for something nicer should the opportunity arise.

Nothing under the stock, I took a few more pictures to maybe help ID it with a better serial number shot. What I would like to do is narrow it down to that 1905 #1357?? M1886 33WCF with a standard pistol grip stock, and try and find a replacement 86 stock and 33WCF Mag tube.
Mike, is the tang issue terminal? or can it be reasonably repaired if repaired at all ?
Looking at how the mainspring was installed I’m beginning to wonder if it really was a pistol grip to start with.

I’d have to agree with bob. Looks like someone took a 71 lever & butt stock and slapped it onto an 86.
Does it shoot any good?
Sincerely,
Maverick
