I have a Winchester 1885 made in 1905 in 45 Eley Caliber. My question, is there any way to tell if this gun is suitable for 45 Nitro Express cartridges of is it made specifically for 45 Black Powder Express? Thanks for any help on this subject.

What is the serial number on your Winchester Single Shot rifle? Is it marked “45 ELEY” or “45 ELEY EX.” ?

Hi Bert,
Thanks for your help. My high wall is serial number 98997. Cody Museum says it was applied on 1/11/1905.
The barrel is marked: “45 ELEY”. Cody Museum says that is the original caliber.

OK, my survey records agree with the CFM. Based on the caliber marking “45 ELEY”, it was chambered for the black powder cartridge versus the smokeless Express cartridge. That stated, you can reload the 45 Eley with smokeless powder with appropriate loads.
