I have a chance to pick up a 1885 High Wall that has a #3 30″ barrel that was a 40-80 ( I think) that is now a 45-70. Bore is 100% and barrel is plum brown with some case color still showing on the receiver. Wood is fair in original condition. Serial is in the 37xxx range as I don’t recall the full #. Trigger is plain and has peep sight. I know it has a very limited value to a collector with the re-bored barrel, but it must have some value. My cost for the gun is around $1200. Would this be a waste of money or not? Thanks for any help. Charles
Charles,
With the complete serial number, I can tell you what caliber it originally was… there was no such thing as a “40-80” though.
If the bore is truly 100%, and it shoots good, $1,200 is a decent price for a shooter grade high-wall in 45-70.
