I recently purchased an 1885 Highwall chambered in 32-40 with a 30″ # 3 barrel made in 1903.  My question is can smokeless factory loads be fired through this rifle.  I have some Imperial 170 grain soft points smokeless loads as well as some vintage Remington factory loads with 165 grain soft points.

The rifle is currently at Turnbull to remedy issues with the trigger and action.

Below are pictures of the rifle and the Cody letter.

I have no intent on handloading any ammunition for this rifle.

Just needs some guidance in what is safe to help preserve this piece of history as well as enjoy.

Thank you!1885-Winchester-High-Wall-Picture-1.jpgImage Enlarger1885-Winchester-High-Wall-Picture-2.jpgImage Enlarger1885-Winchester-High-Wall-Picture-3.jpgImage Enlarger1885-Winchester-High-Wall-Picture-4.jpgImage Enlarger1885-Winchester-High-Wall-Picture-5.jpgImage Enlarger1885-Winchester-High-Wall-Picture-6.jpgImage Enlarger1885-Winchester-High-Wall-Picture-7.jpgImage Enlarger1885-Winchester-High-Wall-Picture-8.jpgImage Enlarger

Absolutely.  Nice tang sight, even with the non-original hole in the base, but that buckhorn should be removed to make effective use of it.

As pleasant as it is to gaze upon your Single Shot I suspect shooting it will be pretty impressive with factory loads it likes. Hope it shoots well for you!

The rear sight only needs to be removed if it is in the way.  Many times they are not a problem if in the lowest position.
