I have a first model civilian carbine. Is there a source for a copy of the original manual?  My main question is what is the recommended procedure to unload a magazine of unfired rounds? Thanks.

I’m not sure if Winchester included a manual with their rifles back in the 19th century.  I don’t remember ever seeing one.  They did include information in the early catalogs on how to dismount, unload and clean the rifle.  Here is a snip from the April 1882 catalog which should give you what you need.

I call myself a collector as it sounds better than hoarder

There’s a couple original catalogs in the current Ward’s Auction:
