I’ve got an 1876 2nd model rifle (SN 6XXX) from my dad’s collection, which does not have caliber designation on the barrel nor on the carrier. On the 73’s I understand these are usually 44-40 but didn’t know if this carried over to the 1876 as well in the larger caliber. Was there a “standard” caliber they did not mark? I know his other 76’s are marked.
(Edited: I put correct model, its a 76 not a 73. My fingers hit the wrong key. Sorry)
If your gun is a 4 digit serial number its a first model not a second. First models were not marked because it was the only caliber the model was made in. When you get to the second models you will see 38’s marked and 44 still not marked for a while.

I understand the first models did not have a dust cover and SN ended about 2500-3000. This one has the screwed on button dust cover. I have two other 2nd models marked 45-60 and a 3rd model 45-60. Were all first models the same caliber and not marked? I do not have my reference books at this location.
If I remember my 76’s right the unmarked ones were 45-75.

Thanks to 1873man I found my answer from another post on same question. Apparently someone asked the same question before and my search didn’t catch it. The standard 76 caliber was 45-75 and were not marked in the early models same as the 73’s were standard with 44-40 cal and were not marked till later.
Thanks again! Still learning.
