I’m sure the letter from the customer is long gone. Interesting gun, I too would have like to see the letter from the customer.

I would say the spirit level is not factory.

Is it correct to have the matting over the barrel address?  The DOK is certainly not factory.  I wonder about the hammer being the only part that is engraved.  Wood does not fit the receiver well.

Chuck,

I have seen a fair number of Model 1885 matte barrels over the top of the address marking. While I agree that it is tacky looking, Winchester actually did do it. Personally, I would have moved the address marking to the left flat of left side of the matting.

The few matted barrels that I have seen had the address moved out of the way.

Of all the 73’s I’ve seen they matted over the barrel address.

I believe it may depend on what year they did the matting, as I’m pretty certain I’ve seen it done both ways on the same model rifle.

I have seen two other 76 Deluxe 50’s with only the hammer, lever, and forearm cap engraved. They all lettered engraved, strange but real. One had Briitish  proofs. T/R

If you enlarge the photos, you’ll see that the hammer, lever and forend cap are engraved.  Nothing unusuall about that.  There isn’t a close-up photo of the rear barrel sight, but it is not an original Winchester configuration, either.  Very similar to a Sharps rifle barrel sight with short leaf.  Without a better close-up, who knows.  The spirit level is obviously not original as shipped from the factory.  That dovetail was cut through the barrel marking.

Rick, you are right.  I didn’t see the cap and lever when I first looked.

This is the standard engraving for a buck and a half, during this period.  For another buck, you could get some small scroll work done on the side plates, also.   WOW!!!  I’ll take two, please.
