Iv had this carbine for a few years and had it lettered some years ago.
I have often wondered about the letter the word (consigned) . Is this common , what was the significance, and can any more information on this number be located.
I should also note it has H.ABRAHAMS & Co MELBOURNE engraved on top of receiver and dust cover.
thanks all

Tony,
I don’t have a answer that I have found. Just a guess. Winchester sent to someone to sell for them but perhaps it wasn’t their normal outlet.

Thanks Bob, i do know Abrahams retailed in firearms in the same street a James Rosier, a winchester importer. Quite a few Australian winchester importers had their owned mark stamped at the factory, ie Daisy stinger etc.
Mabe Bert has some knowledge on my carbine being roll stamped H.Abrahams Melbourne.
Tony,
Until just now, I had not ever encountered or heard of a Winchester with that specific marking on it. I suspect that the marking was applied to the receiver after it arrived in Australia (just as James Rosier did). The Perry Brothers Ltd. (STINGER) and the F. Lassetter & Co. (DAISY) Winchesters firearms were all marked (on the barrel) by Winchester during the manufacture process (and noted in the warehouse ledger records).

Thanks Bert, i thought the same about Abrahams applying the marking but the mark is deffinately a roll stamp, which is why i thought winchester may have done it.
these abrahams marking are very scarce, i know of only 3 others. you can clearly see they had two goes at it.
what about the wording (consigned) on the letter Bert, is this common etc.
You brought this up not long ago

A man can never have too many WINCHESTERS...
L have seen the “Consigned” entry in at least a few hundred ledger entries, but there is no explanation for what exactly it means. I have always assumed that it was shipped to a “Jobber” or large sales company without immediate receipt of payment. I do know that Winchester did this for their larger customers, and payment was rendered after the gun sold by the retailer.
