In selling 1873 parts, what is the legal “frame”? The actual frame or the numbered lower tang? Is there a way to date the frame itself?

Wolfbait,

The legal part of the 73 would be the part that has the serial number or the lower tag. Years ago when the feds where going to stop the manufacture of certain types of black guns after a certain date, manufactures started to stamp serial numbers on sheet metal and stock piled them. The serial number on the piece of metal is the gun. A 73 receiver can’t be dated beyond 1st, 2nd or 3rd model receiver features. I see on Ebay they are selling all the parts of the 73 where a few years ago you couldn’t, Ebay would end them if they thought it was major gun part. Now they are  looking the other direction either from a policy change or they just want the money. I haven’t looked at their policy lately.

Thanks.  When did they start putting the proof mark on the frame and barrel?

1903, but you can’t say thats 100% accurate since you could have a earlier gun returned and proofed. Now you can date the 3rd models from the upper tang model stamps.

Are you saying you can date the 3rd models from the upper tang model stamps? Mine has Model 1873 in fancy script with a very long front M leg, with a backwards comma after model and the 1873 in up and down letters. Fancy designs before and after the Model 1873 stamping.

You can to a point but the model stamp cover most of the 3rd models. It starts just before the 2nd model ends and goes to about 600,000, then you have the three line stamp which is “MODEL 1873”, “WINCHESTER” and then “TRADEMARK” on the last line. This stamp is from about 600,000 to 700,000. Then the last variation is the same as the previous stamp except the ‘trademark” is replaced by “TRADEMARK REG IN US PAT OFF”. The fancy designs on the ends are called a “Flirtalee” and there is a variation in the Flirtalee around 560,000 to 570,000

Don’t you mean “fleur de lis” ? The French Symbol?
