It sure looks like a cut-off job to me…maybe a Frankenchester?  Built by Bubba to match a letter??  Muzzle face diameter too big, wrong mag tube, no caliber marking on carrier block, can’t see any proof-marks on barrel or receiver…

Yep – All wrong. Would not touch that with a 10 ft pole.

Serial # looks altered. Too many other things to mention.

No bids, looks like nobody’s interested.

Nice story but I can’t get past the serial number. Appears to be wrong style of numerals. Can’t say much about the rest as I can’t recall seeing an 1873 Trapper.

The gun was in the last RIA auction lot 20, Two 73’s  that sold for $2587. The guy checked the serial number judging from the date of the letter and got a surprise when it came back as a short rifle and thinks he won the lottery.

The lower tang appears to have been replaced – can’t explain the mismatched finish otherwise – then fitted to a Frankenchester to match the factory records.
