I was inspecting my newly acquired 1873 2nd Model and noticed the dust cover only opens half way on the initial cycle. Seems to be solid as for as manually sliding it both directions and has hardly any play. What would be the part, or mechanism to give attention to for me to repair this?
The dust cover is opened by the nub on the top of the extractor hitting the block under the dust cover which is held on by the screw at the front of the cover so if that nub is worn down or the bolt is sagging it can do that or if any of the parts have been replaced and don’t match up.

The cover definitely looks to be original as the patina matches the rest of the rifle. I’ll have to check it out once I do my disassembly and cleanup. Thank you Bob!
