I just purchased a Model 1873 and in all of my research on the gun I cannot find an explanation as to why this model (and no others) has a dust cover. What unique feature of the ’73’s action made it necessary to add such a cover i.e., why would “dust” be a problem?
Thanks to anyone who can provide an explanation.
John
John,
The 73 was not the only model with a dust cover, the Winchester 1876 also had a dust cover. The dust cover was used to keep junk out of the action when not being used. Other models the 86, 92, 94 etc. did not need a separate dust cover since the bolt design was such that it covered the the workings inside.

Also keep in mind, this is not the “Household Dust” variety that we’re accustomed to nowadays.
